Recently at a home visit a mom began crying and confided in me that she did not have enough money to buy her soon to be 12 month old daughter toys for her birthday. While mom and I were chatting the baby was playing with a piece of paper (which she always does during visits). We discussed all of the developmentally appropriate tasks the baby was completing with the paper. Mom smiled and told me how relieved she was to learn her baby could meet milestones without expensive toys.
