One young lady that I visit recently attended the circus with her family. When I arrived the next week I asked her and her mother how it was. Mom replied that she was not so impressed, but Hanna was very enthusiastic in recalling all of the events at the big top. With the limited vocabulary that she has, as she is only two, she both told me about the shows and acted them out. She began by demonstrating how the elephants walked in a line holding another's tail with their "nose". She then became mildly distressed in recounting the bears and dogs, excited about their talents but she was quite upset about the "meanie lady" that "hit" the animals. Her mother and I were concerned and confused as to what she was referring to, but after a few more demonstrations of hitting her own back and flicking her wrist, her mother exclaimed "Oh, she must mean the tamer! She had a whip, but I had hardly noticed and we had never talked about her!" Hanna's explanation of the Circus was so detailed and precise her mother and I were once again flabbergasted by her amazing recall of information, as well as her labeling the bear and dog tamer as a "meanie". For her to show extensive, vivid recall, as well as making determinations of someones character based upon their actions, you would have thought you were talking to a much older child.
