Aim And Find The Target!

Babies have a strong interest in exploring objects, using their hands and eyes together. Clothes Pins in a Bottle, is a thirteen month parent-child activity, that requires the child to put clothes pins or balls into round openings. The first time IW attempted this activity, he grasped the pin with his entire hand, and was unable to drop it in. Mom acted as the consultant, and showed him how to hold the pin, and drop it into the opening. She also showed him how to turn the bottle upside down and shake it, to get the pins out. When I arrived at IW's home this week, Mom stated that the family had been practicing this activity. IW held the clothes pin in his left hand, and transferred it to his right hand. Using a pincer grasp to hold the pin, he aimed for the target, and accurately placed the pin into the small round opening. He repeated this new skill over and over. What a great example, to emphasize the value of repetition, in developing eye-hand coordination.
