MS is a 24 month old boy, who was recently enrolled in our program. MS and his Mother live with his Grandmother, who is an early childhood educator. Last week, I administered the 24 Month Ages and Stages Questionnaire. The ASQ is a screening instrument designed to give parents a clear picture of their child's strengths, weaknesses and emerging skills in five areas. MS did well in all areas of the ASQ. One exceptional skill MS demonstrated was in the fine motor area. Stringing requires fine motor development, to hold a string steady and accurately put it through a hole in a bead. Grandmother stated that he had not been exposed to stringing, and doubted he had the skills to complete this task. MS succesfully competed this task after some practice. His family was elated! MS proceeded to demonstrate his exceptional fine motor skills. He demonstrated that he could properly use scissors (child safety scissors), and cut paper. His grandmother had exposed him to this fine motor skill activity before the age of two. Give a child the opportunity, time and guidance and they will succeed. Way to go MS!
