Weekly socials provide an opportunity for families to be introduced to new people, activities, experiences, and foods. I visit a family that immigrated here from the middle east and generally eat only traditional middle eastern foods. During our evening social last month they tried baked potatoes for the first time as well as a casserole type beef noodle dish. The family was very excited about them both, and the next week at our home visit asked me for the "recipe" for baking potatoes. They have already tried the baked potatoes and plan to make the casserole soon. It is exciting for me that our program was able to provide a new cultural experience for them, especially since they are offering me new traditional foods and drinks each week at our home visits.
