Coping with temper tantrums can be an exhausting, nerve wracking task for parents. A recent visit with TM and his mother revealed that he had reached his "boiling point". 15 month old TM had thrown himself on the floor, striking out with his arms and legs, while crying. Mom attempted to "reason" with TM as the tantrum escalated! Mom quickly realized that a temper tantrum was not the time for a discussion with TM. I assured her that this behavior was a normal process of development, due to frustration, lack of language and a desire for autonomy. We reviewed various attempts Mom had made to handle tantrums and whether or not they had been successful. Mom gave me permission to model some of the techniques of distraction, redirection and walking away from a tantrum. She understood that despite the best preventive methods, that TM may still reach his "boiling point" and have a tantrum. Mom realized TM needed her to love and guide him, as he learned to manage strong emotions and develop control over his impulses and behavior.
