Stranger Danger

We have all seen it before. You see a cute baby in the store so you naturally begin talking in "baby talk" to the baby. The baby immediately turns his or her head into their mom's chest and begins wailing. I have had the same experience with Astrid, an 8 month old I visit. Upon my entrance, she looks at me, turns her head into her mom's chest, and cries. I know this is a natural part of development, but it is always a small shot to the ego. My last visit changed everything. When I entered, Astrid smiled and squirmed to get out of mom's grasp. When mom set her down she crawled over to me, put her hand on my leg, and looked up at me and smiled! Mom said that Astrid is spending less and less time in her lap and more time exploring her world and those in it. She noted that Astrid always keeps her eye on mom, but believes our weekly visits has given her the confidence she needs to do some independent learning.
