First Barks

Last week I was excited to be present for 12 month old Hanna's first animal sounds. Hanna's mom and I were discussing the importance of tapping on a picture in a book to direct the child's attention to what is being talked about. While modeling this technique I was making barking sounds and tapping on a picture of a Dalmatian. Hanna then started to bark, and when asked "Where is the dog?", she tapped the picture and barked. After a lot of clapping and praise, Mom practiced the same technique on a picture of a lion. Hanna was able to roar and tap on the lion as well. When Mom tapped on the picture of the dog again she barked. Jessica, Hanna's mom, was so excited that she started to tear up. Jessica could not wait for her husband to get home so that Hanna could show off her new skill.
