"Anything you can do, I can do better"

I was recently reminded that the teacher is not always right. During a home visit with a 11 month little girl, mom, child, and I were working on the development of large motor skills. The activity asked the child to push a large laundry basket while walking in order to help with balance and gross motor. After modeling how to push the large basket across the floor, this little girl looked at me, smiled, and proceeded to pick the basket up off the floor, hold it over her head, and walk into the kitchen. It was as if she was trying to tell us that she had a much more efficient way to move the basket! Mom noted that her child's balance was just fine and she was probably ready for the next month's activity. This was one time when I definitely did not mind being shown up by a kiddo!
