Because of our close and intimate relationships with parents, parent educators are often asked to help to alleviate developmental fears parents have. During a recent home visit, the mom of an 19 month old little boy told me how worried she was that her son was not talking more. Her daughter was talking much more by this age. After completing a developmental screening it was found that there was some language delay. A referral was made to Sooner Start to have a language specialist come in and assess the situation and provide care if needed. Mom let me know last week that the Sooner Start Specialist found no delays and felt the issue was related to an excess amount of fluid on his left ear. This little boy was having trouble hearing, so naturally could not produce the normal amount of language for his age. The mom has an appointment with an audiologist to see about getting tubes in his ears. The Sooner Start specialist is due to return after the doctor visit to make sure the little boy is still on track. Mom was so relieved that her fear could be easily fixed. What a wonderful situation to witness!
