I was sitting at the office working when my phone rang, at the other end was Mirna (Karina's mom) crying and screaming! I asked what was wrong? Mom replied that Taly (Karina's baby brother) had swallowed a penny! I could hear him in the background gasping for air! I immediately told mom to call 911. Mom, desperate told me that she didn't speak English. I asked for her permission and called 911. I translated over the phone for the firefighters and paramedics. Mom and Taly were taken to the hospital where the penny was removed. Later, I spoke with mom about the importance of safety around the home and the importance of learning English. In my next visit I will bring a safety checklist and some safety handouts from our wonderful curriculum, as well as information about English classes available in our school district. As far as Taly, he's doing great as well as mom and Karina. This parent educator was glad to use this opportunity to assist and continue teaching this family new things.
