While playing a classification game, 35 month old Yuridia became confused about which section of the game board one object belonged. The board was set up in five sections: Animals, Food, Clothing, Household Items, and Transportation. There were multiple items for each, as well as a picture on the back to identify the correct placement of each. Yuri breezed through most the pictures, but when she came to a coffee cup she asked her mom, her mom pointed to the household area and Yuri obediently placed it there and moved on. After two or three more she returned to the coffee mug and picked it up and moved it to the food section, and told her mom that she thought it belonged there, instead of in the house. Although there was no beverage visible in the mug, she corresponded the coffee mug with a food item. This was an impressive show of critical thinking, and also thinking for herself. Most children her age would have taken their parents word as law, but this little girl was willing to change her mind and make her own decisions.
