Learning New Skills

We often talk about the importance of repetition when children are learning new skills, but repetition is important for adults as well. I visit a home with a very loving mom who, by nature, is a very quiet person. We have been discussing the importance of parallel talk, self talk, and stretch talk so that her son can hear and learn new vocabulary. Her son has been slow to learn to talk, and so this is a theme I have been repeating at every visit. On the last few visits I have observed her talking more to her son as he plays. I commented on this, and she just beamed. She said she had been trying really hard to put into practice the ideas we had been talking about. As her son repeated back a word she said, she could see her hard work paying off.
