When I first began visiting J many months ago, I noticed that she was easily frustrated when a task was difficult. She would cry if she couldn't do something the first time and immediately went to her parents or siblings to have them do the task for her. I praised the siblings for wanting to help their sister, but encouraged them to let her work longer at tasks rather than jumping in and doing things for her. I also brought in some easier activities that she could have success in and gradually worked up to more challenging activities. Mom and Dad began using these strategies at home and have commented on the increased persistence she is showing when faced with a challenge. It is exciting to see her pride when she learns that she can accomplish something new.
