On a recent home visit I was working on matching with a variety of materials with 33 month old AP. We began matching shapes, which AP was able to do easily, then moved on to matching cardboard teddy bears. AP was struggling to match the bears and he eventually became frustrated and was ready to quit. As I was leaving AP walked me into the entry where I picked up my shoe from the families pile of assorted shoes and asked for his help in finding its mate. He quickly was able to find the match and went on to excitedly organize the pile into rows of matched shoes. His mother and I were very excited that he was practicing this new skill with such enthusiasm.
