Mealtime...Pleasant and Healthy

Mealtime can be difficult and challenging for most parents with toddlers. Parents often struggle understanding the division of responsibility between parent and child in establishing good eating practices. H's Mom demonstrated at a recent home visit that she has a good understanding of her child's nutritional needs and understands her role in feeding her child. 17 month old H was sitting in her high chair eating lunch when I arrived for a home visit. Mom had provided H a healthy and appetizing protein, vegetable and milk that was size appropriate. H used a spoon and her fingers and Mom allowed her to eat, at her own pace. H indicated to Mom when she was full by using gestures. Mom stated that she expects "bumps" along the way as she helps her child to learn good eating habits. Mom is learning to avoid power struggles over food and making mealtimes pleasant for herself and H.
