On a recent visit with 15 month old ST, Mom and I sang "Old McDonald". Mom said it was the first time for her to sing this English song with her son. ST was busy playing with the farm animals and did not give an immediate reaction to the song. About 20 minutes later as the visit continued, little ST began rocking side to side and singing "E-I-O; E-I-O". Mom and I immediately joined in and sang the song with him. M0m and I discussed how children are listening to all that is going on in their environment and processing it. We also talked about the importance of reading and singing to children to promote language development, memory, and bonding. Several more times during the visit, ST would initiate the song and each time Mom and I happily joined in.
