During a recent visit with 6 week old Luis, mom noted her concern about how Luis kept holding his head turned to one side. I told mom that he might be turning his head to the side because he can hear the TV and is turning his head to the music that was playing on a children's program. I explained to mom that reception of music and sound is an important step in language development. Mom was a bit skeptical, so I asked her to turn down the TV. Mom did so and then began talking to me. Luis turned his head from the direction of the TV to the direction where mom was sitting talking to me! I could just see the relief wash over mom's face. She especially liked that Luis perferred her voice over my own. Mom could really see what a strong emotional attachment her newborn had already formed with her. It is truly such a joy to see these little ones development..it is also an added bonus when we can releive a little "worried mama syndrome" along the way!
