Let's Pretend
Pretend play is an important part of intellectual as well as social-emotional development. It is a topic often discussed with caregivers as we observe their children playing. Most children will pretend to feed and care for a stuffed animal or doll, but some are more creative than others and use symbolic representation, pretending that an object (i.e. shoe) is something else (i.e. telephone). Mia is one of those children that is very creative. In our color matching activity, she not only matched each colored object to it's corresponding box, but she used the crayon as a bottle, pretending to feed the bird. Then she told mom the "bottle" was empty and pretended the banana was a container of milk, refilling the "crayon" with the pretend liquid. Observing Mia is such fun and you never know what she'll do next. MJ
