ID is a 26 month old boy, whom I have been visiting for two months. His mother is a single parent, who works full time, and will attend college this Fall. ID and his mother are fortunate, to have a grandmother and a great-grandmother, who provide child care and a loving environment. In order for mom to attend college, it was necessary to seek additional child care. The family requested center-based placement. ID's great-grandmother was somewhat apprehensive, about him attending "school". She was encouraged to attend a socialization with ID. Socialization experiences are an ideal time for families, to observe their child at play, and noticing what their child's interest, skills and habits are. This was an opportunity for ID's family to learn, how he would act in a group. ID, grandmother and great-grandmother attended the social. ID had a great time, and his family had fun observing him in action. ID will enter a center this week. As the family prepares for ID's first day at "school", I hope they will remember the socialization as a fun, learning and "teachable moment".
