Don't Forget the Tiger

Ring Around the Rosy is a popular song and game with young children and I often end my visits with this activity. As I stood up to begin the game on a recent visit to 2 and 1/2 year old K.s house several weeks ago, I noticed the rug we were standing on had the design of a large tiger. In a moment of silliness, I told K to grab the tiger's paw so that he could play the game along with us. I forgot about this on the next visit, but of course, K did not. Before joining hands with Mom and me, he reminded me that we needed to grab the tiger's paw. He has remembered this on every visit since then as well. Mom and I discussed his growing memory and his love for pretend play. We also discussed the importance of routines and rituals in the lives of children and the fun and security that they derive from them.
